On July 24—day 2 of USJE’s RCMP tour in British Columbia—the USJE team started the morning at Hope Detachment, where Staff Sargeant Mike Sargent provided information on the day-to-day operations of the area’s detachment. The fourteen police officers are supported by only one Detachment Service Assistant (DSA) and three municipal workers.

The team then headed north to Kamloops’ rural Detachment (Tk’emlups). After an informal tour of the detachment, the team met with Superintendent Jeff Pelley who offered support for USJE’s RCMP campaign and the work of Public Service Employees within the RCMP. The USJE Communications Team interviewed a DSA and Civilian Member who agreed to take part in the union’s campaign. USJE’s leadership team also took this opportunity to answer various questions about the status of Civilian Members and their unique challenges.

The delegation made an unscheduled detour to the South East District regional office in Kamloops to meet with five USJE members. Members at this location have unique roles, including firearms compliance and administration for officers that float between sites. The Communications team interviewed two members, then the team headed out to Kelowna to prepare for the next day’s visits at the South East District HQ and Merritt Detachment.
