USJE offers its deepest sympathies to the families, friends, colleagues, and loved ones of the four Canadian Armed Forces members who lost their lives during a fire training-related incident at CFB Wainwright. We also extend our thoughts to the dozens of members who were injured and to all those affected by this devastating event.
As USJE is a large federal public service union that represents many members who work in public safety, justice, law enforcement, emergency preparedness, corrections, and related sectors, we recognize that this tragedy will have a profound impact on many of our members, their colleagues and their families. Incidents of this nature are felt far beyond those directly involved, including first responders, support personnel, and communities across the country.
We also wish to acknowledge the efforts of the emergency responders, including fire, police, paramedics and other health care professionals, military personnel, and support workers who immediately responded to the incident and continue to provide crucial care and assistance to those affected. The level of coordination between and among governments, as well as with the RCMP’s ”K” Division has been seamless.
If you require assistance or are asked to meet with management regarding this incident, please contact your Regional Vice-President or a member of your local executive for guidance and support.
If you or someone you know needs assistance, we encourage you to visit the Government of Canada’s Mental Health Support: Get Help webpage, which provides access to mental health services, crisis supports and community resources organized by province and territory. The site also includes information on national services and emergency support options, including the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In moments of tragedy such as this, it is important that we come together in solidarity and support one another. We honor the service and sacrifice of those who lost their lives and hold all those affected by this tragedy in our thoughts.
