During a virtual meeting on May 12, 2026, the USJE National Executive approved a donation of $870 from unrestricted reserves to Hestia House, a long-standing shelter supporting women and children experiencing abuse in Saint John.
On May 2, RVP Carol Osborne attended a fundraising event for Hestia House on behalf of USJE. Proceeds raised by attendees was $870. The PSAC National President, Sharon DeSousa, was in attendance and also served as the special guest speaker. She matched the $870 on behalf of the PSAC, and also challenged any PSAC Component in attendance to match the amount. On May 12, during the monthly virtual RVP call, RVPs Osborne and Johnston moved and seconded a motion for USJE to meet the challenge and donate $870 from unrestricted reserves to Hestia House. This motion was passed by the National Executive, tripling the impact of the community’s efforts.
For more than 40 years, Hestia House provided a secure and supportive environment for women and their children experiencing abuse in Saint John, offering emergency shelter, counselling, and access to essential community resources. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the organization plays a vital role in helping women better understand their experiences, access supports, and make informed decisions about their future.
This donation reflects USJE’s ongoing commitment to supporting initiatives that promote safety and well-being in communities across Canada.
