MP Claude DeBellefeuille Speaks with USJE Members in Chicoutimi

This past August 12, Bloc Québécois MP and party spokesperson on public safety, Claude DeBellefeuille, visited the Chicoutimi Parole Office to acquaint herself with the realities faced by the Parole Officers who monitor federal offenders.

Ms. DeBellefeuille met with USJE members, including Regional Vice-President Annie Blanchette, who participated in the discussions, which shed light on several major challenges facing front-line professionals.

In particular, USJE members mentioned the constant increase in their workload. This pressure is not solely the effect of the federal government’s Comprehensive Expenditure Review, but also stems from both the ongoing addition of administrative duties and changes to a clientele presenting with increasingly complex needs.

The increase in administrative duties reduces the time officers can devote to their primary mission: active monitoring and coaching of offenders under surveillance in the community. Members expressed their concerns over the impacts of this situation on the effectiveness of interventions and on public safety.

Discussions also touched on issues of mental health and personal safety faced by members in carrying out their duties. Officers often work in complex situations and are sometimes isolated. They have to deal with growing pressure while maintaining essential services for the public.

USJE thanks Ms. DeBellefeuille for her interest and ongoing support for its members’ experiences, and for this opportunity to hold a direct conversation about the challenges facing public safety and justice staff. USJE also thanks the District Director, Dominique Dulac, for her welcome and support during this visit. The Union will continue its efforts to stay informed about the issues facing its members and to demand the resources they need to work safely and effectively.
