The federal Government Employees Compensation Act (GECA) hasn’t been updated in 50 years. Sustained advocacy by USJE resulted in a Private Members Bill, C-357, being introduced in the House of Commons on September 20, 2023.
On October 4, 2024, Member of Parliament Peter Julian presented a petition calling upon the House of Commons to implement USJE’s proposed changes to GECA that would ensure that federal public safety personnel — many of whom are regularly denied worker’s compensation by provincial/territorial boards for their injuries — would finally have access to the compensation and support they so deserve.
With Parliament’s prorogation on January 6, 2025, all Bills are officially terminated and must be reintroduced. USJE will be working with Members of Parliament to ensure that our legislative goals in regards to GECA are re-introduced in the House of Commons as soon as possible.
The petition will be closing February 1. To date, we reached over 1,000 signatures. Any paper copy of the petition should be mailed immediately, free of charge, to Peter Julian’s office: House of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0A6
