Your USJE National Executive has donated $10,000 to the Village of Lytton in southern BC to help them rebuild their beautiful town. The town was almost completely destroyed by fire on June 30, 2021, including most homes and almost all of the infrastructure. While the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, temperatures rose to almost 49.6 C the day before the fire, prompting the evacuation of the entire town, which most certainly saved many lives.
The rebuild plan includes many sustainability goals such as a geothermal grid and extensive use of green energy. It also includes measures to protect the town from future fire and drought, such as planting drought tolerant trees and plants and using fire resistant building materials.
Lytton was one of the communities most devastated by last year’s extensive wildfire season in BC, and their resilience in the face of such tragedy is inspiring. USJE applauds the town’s efforts to build back better and safer!
