USJE National President and Communications Team end RCMP Ontario tour at the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre in North Bay

On August 22, the third and final day of the tour of Ontario RCMP workplaces, President David Neufeld and members of the USJE communications team met with members who work at the only Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre which is located in North Bay.

The USJE team received a tour of the facilities by Jeff Thomson, Acting Officer in Charge, and then met with members to conduct individual interviews for USJE’s National RCMP campaign. We would like to thank the seven members that took part in the interviews.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) was created in 2004 in conjunction with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and is the only anti-fraud unit in Canada. Among their many duties, the team operates a call centre that provides direct support to Canadians impacted by fraud, and assists police domestically and internationally to help solve fraud cases around the world. The unit employs fewer than 30 staff who receive over 400,000 calls per year.

In order for law enforcement to combat fraud and cybercrime, it is essential that those who experience, or fall victim, report it to local police and the CAFC. Local police are positioned to investigate the incident and the CAFC supports law enforcement by sharing information collected through the reports.

To recap the week, a total of 16 members shared their stories this week as part of the Ontario RCMP Site Visits. USJE would like to thank Line Paquet and Deirdre Lepage of the Labour Relations team. A special thank you to the following USJE members who assisted in organizing these site visits and meeting with members:

  • Tracy Coates, USJE Local President and USJE Equity Committee member;
  • Tamara Colantonio, member of the local executive;
  • Allan Boomhour, shop steward;
  • Ian Reodica, USJE health and safety representative at the local and also a member of USJE’s Health and Safety Advisory Committee;
  • Kelly Sercombe; and
  • Charmaine Bruce
