RVP Carol Osborne visits Saint John Parole Office and Parrtown CCC for Local 60074 AGM

On May 30, 2025, RVP Carol Osborne and Local President Annie Thériault visited the Saint John Parole Office and Parrtown CCC for Local 60074s AGM. RVP Osborne and President Thériault had an opportunity to walk around the site and speak to members who were available. This visit was particularly special for RVP Osborne as this co-located Community site is where her career started with Correctional Service Canada. She was once the Local President, prior to being elected RVP in 2011. The AGM was held at noon in a hybrid format with members of the Local from across the Province of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island joining in.

During the AGM, finances were presented to the membership. President Thériault also spoke about the Federal Budget cuts that impact USJE members. RVP Osborne spoke of the work that the Mobilization Committee is doing in that regard and that members should follow the USJE website and social media for updates.

President Thériault reiterated that USJE has been urging members to stop working for free. She outlined that members are expected to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined in their work descriptions, to prioritize their work with their manager, follow the hours of work in the Collective Agreements and to be mindful of their mental health. Any accommodation towards management beyond these is free work. There was a question with regards to the Community Parole Officer Resource Formula (CPORF) as it relates to participating in validation exercises. RVP Osborne explained that while the USJE is no longer a part of the Working Group, as we are not in agreement with a LEAN type method of capturing work, members are encouraged to participate in the validation exercises, when possible.

President Thériault provided the email address for members who continue to have pay concerns with overpayment recovery letters.

President Thériault spoke about the USJE podcast – The Union Safety Net. She spoke about the most recent one where RVP Osborne was one of the contributors. RVP Osborne encouraged members to listen to the podcasts and expressed how proud she was to speak on behalf of the CR group. She said that the podcasts are informative and normally 20-35 minutes in length, so they can be easily listened to while commuting.

President Thériault reminded members that we are currently in bargaining again and that our Collective Agreement expires on June 20, 2025.

President Thériault reminded members of PSAC training that will be available in the fall and encouraged members to attend. She explained that although the PSAC trainings are normally held on the weekend, the PSAC pays a per diem and USJE pay salary equivalent.

RVP Osborne thanked the Local Executive and Membership for the visit and a productive meeting in her hometown. It is not often that she does not have to travel a great distance to meet members. She thanked President Thériault for travelling all the way down from Edmundston in the Madawaska. She wishes to express her gratitude to all the USJE members who attended as over half of the membership turned up in-person and virtually.
