RVP Andréanne Samson visited the office of Anna Gainey, the new Member of Parliament for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce – Westmount, early this morning to inform her of the decision affecting members of Local 10004 who have had their union office taken away.
The letter provides a clear account of the working conditions at C Division RCMP in Westmount. The removal of the union office, where members could openly and confidentially discuss solutions to various workplace conflicts, is an unjustifiable attack on the Local. The decision was taken shortly after the historic PSAC strike and appears to be a retaliatory measure. Easy access to union resources is a right that is undisputed by the Government of Canada.
Local 10004’s members have had access to the union office for over 15 years. The overwhelming majority of members affected are women, with the office functioning as a safe space.
The Trudeau government has made gender equality one of the pillars of its national platform and Canada’s image abroad. This makes MP Gainey an ideal ally.
“I want the support of all USJE members across Canada. A bilingual electronic petition will be circulating shortly, and I encourage all our members to sign it. It will be delivered to the Minister for the Status of Women, Marcie Ien. I encourage RCMP management in Westmount to do the right thing and give the power back to our women by restoring their office!” said RVP Samson.
