Stigma Out and Understanding In: National PTSD Awareness Day
National PTSD Awareness Day is marked annually on June 27 to raise awareness of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As public safety personnel, USJE members face further risk of exposure to potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTEs) during the course of their duties.

USJE is currently lobbying the federal government to make changes to presumptive injury definitions so that our trauma-injured members may be covered by presumptive injury legislation.
National Indigenous Peoples Day: Decolonizing our union
June 21 is an occasion to celebrate Indigenous history, culture, and diversity, as well as the many contributions of Indigenous peoples to Canada. For non-Indigenous Canadians, and for organizations like PSAC, it’s also an opportunity to reflect on our history and to recognize the untruths in the settler’s perspective so we can learn how to decolonize our organizations and communities in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples.
Members picket Joyceville Institution to protest delays in contract bargaining
Two USJE locals collaborated on an info picket at Joyceville Institution on June 14, to show their displeasure with stalled contract negotiations. It has been almost a year since the contract expired.
Parole Officer roundtable with Public Safety Minister
On June 8th, the nationally based Union of Safety and Justice Employees convened a special meeting between 16 federal Parole Officers and Canada’s Public Safety Minister, the Hon. Marco Mendicino. Member of Parliament Pam Damoff, who serves as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Safety, was also in attendance.

Local President and Equity Committee member Satinder Bains talks to Regina—Qu’Appelle Conservative MP Andrew Scheer about inflation and collective bargaining
Local 40002 President Satinder Bains met with MP and former federal Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer (Regina—Qu’Appelle, SK) on June 3 to discuss how the struggling economy and rapidly rising inflation are impacting union members and making it imperative that current collective bargaining bring improved conditions for USJE and PSAC members.
National Local Presidents’ Meeting recap
USJE held our National Local Presidents’ Meeting (NLPM) on June 7-8 in Ottawa. Over 140 delegates from across the country joined in person for two packed days of learning and collaboration.
